Custody & Redemption
The token moves in seconds. The metal moves on the custodian's terms.
The first question is whether the metal is allocated. Allocated gold means specific bars, identified by serial number, are set aside for token holders, typically in vaults holding LBMA Good Delivery bars and run by firms such as Brink's or Malca-Amit. Unallocated holdings are generally a claim against the provider rather than ownership of specific bars, so if the provider fails you may rank alongside its other creditors. Insurance and physical redemption terms vary by issuer. Many holders can redeem for cash, while physical delivery may require a minimum amount, full KYC and paying for shipping.
Independent bar counts are what make these claims checkable.
Custody is about who holds the bars. Redemption is about whether, and how, you can get them.
